Like other premium iRobot models (including the top pick), they use intelligent mapping technology to create detailed floor plans and avoid household obstacles such as cords and furniture legs. The robots also feature a feature called Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our bare floor tests and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to get stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate through rooms with a lot of people efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good value particularly if your office or home has lots of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also very quiet and works while you're at work or in school. The only thing it's missing that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with self-emptying docks, however. If you want to change the mopping pad to dry ones in a matter of seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that can also mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean, and efficient in dealing with larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot automatic hoover for carpets, although it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combo makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste, and it will learn your home's layout over time to provide more efficient cleaning. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming this feature, which we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that looks like a regular Roomba than the competition's boxes, this mop and robot vacuum is among the most appealing looking in our tests. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that has 100% in our evaluations, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station and boasts an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with an easy mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit which could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or at night as you attempt to sleep.

It's also a bit costly however, not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing to put up some more volume and some extra cost this is a capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot automatic vacuum and mop robot and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to create floorplans and identify obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was sometimes confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home based on how dirty these areas are.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose models with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house via the app or via voice commands. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be extremely useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd imagine from its price. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, arrange the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It is equipped with an impressive 8000 Pascal suction and clever combs for removing pet hair. And you can create a spot-clean that scours a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It is more appealing in its design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like cute little eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, but it's more likely to be caught on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums that we've test. It also comes with an app that is less intuitive and has a tiny base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
