Like other premium iRobot models (including the top-rated model) they employ intelligent mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate home-based obstacles like cords and furniture legs. They also have carpet boost which boosts the robot's power when it spots an abundance of dirt on the carpet, allowing it cleaned up quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests on floors that were bare and are especially adept in cleaning dog hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For one, the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology, so it's prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a good value for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also extremely quiet and works while you're at work or school. The only thing it's missing that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has an auto-emptying dock, however. If you need to, the mopping pad can be replaced with an awe-inspiring one in a matter of minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can also mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as fluid navigation make it simple to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also features strong suction and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the best robot vacuum for carpets, but it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This top-performing mop and vacuum combo makes use of advanced sensors to dodge obstacles and pet waste and it will learn your home's layout over time for more efficient cleaning. The app lets you set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to other models.

Its obstacle detection was superb and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically emptys into its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba rather than the boxy units, this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most appealing looking in our reviews. The newest model from iRobot is its most advanced and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored 100% in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully self-refill and empty its base station and it boasts industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's a noisy unit that could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally capable and look better. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and some additional cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will delight most.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and washes and drys mop pads.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home depending on the amount of dirt they are.

If you own a larger home, it's worth selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned by using the app or voice control. A stairway mode is useful if you have a lot furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be extremely useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It vacuums well and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate the mapping process, which gathers information on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app also gives access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, meaning it is able to reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It also has a strong 8000 Pascal suction and combs with intelligent technology for pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras look like cute eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, however it is more likely to get stuck on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums that we have tested. It also has an app that's less intuitive and has a tiny base station that can't double as a bin to empty.
