How to Replace an audi car key cover G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi advance key, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
