Upgrades to equipment provide a bonus to the item's base stats. This bonus scales with the upgrade component's level and rarity.

Components

Upgrade components are the things that improve your armor and weapons more effective. You can locate them by destroying enemies, buying them from karma sellers or finding them in the form of item-spheres. You can also get them from equipment that contains the components, or by utilizing high-end salvage kits like Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components cannot be destroyed by removing them from an item upgrade.

The main function of upgrade components is to enable an item to be upgraded but they also serve other purposes. They can be stacked to increase the level of experience gained by upgrading existing weapons or gear. They can be made for additional bonuses. A crafted glyph can increase the chances of upgrading its target, while boost upgrades increase the defense or attack capabilities of the weapon.

You can attach an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will show an upgrade component list that the item level upgrade can be upgraded to. Alternatively, you can use the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either scenario the item will be upgraded when enough upgrade components have been collected.

Each component is assigned an experience multiplier. This determines how much experience an item will gain when upgraded using the component. For instance, organic components give an experience multiplier that is higher than mechanical ones. It is therefore best to upgrade using organic components until you reach the experience multiplier for the next level of the weapon or gear, and then change to mechanical upgrades.

In addition to the multiplier of experience, each item also has the maximum number of upgrades it can receive. The number of upgrades are determined by its upgradeable rank and the upgrade type of the upgradeable item. For instance, the most expensive possible upgrade for a weapon is a weapon of tier 10. The most commonly used upgrade is a gun with tier 6 and an armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets

A set is a collection of objects that share the same bonus. Each item can be upgraded at the least once. The upgrade will increase the amount of bonuses you can expect to receive. When you first upgrade an item or set piece is that it will be given an increase of +1 to its primary stat.
