Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.

The more modernized gear generally has a more value in trade regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or a very high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in every major city, and can be accessed at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current level of the equipment being upgraded however, they will always be less expensive than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and accessories. Players can purchase them from NPCs of Item level upgrade upgraders in a variety of currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor using a button, which will show a preview of the item at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the item slot and current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currencies.

Item upgraders can be found at many locations, including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of getting an entirely new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrade upgrader at beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only accessible through a variety means. This is both a benefit and an issue.

Crests

Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests can only be used on equipment of a particular rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and easiest upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade can require up to 20 crests, depending on the type of gear being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for gear that is used in the endgame. These crests can be exchanged with an upgrader for the item, such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and pathways.

The use of these currencies isn't too difficult, but the system will introduce a few changes to the overall upgrade process. When a piece has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it will no longer require Flightstones. This is to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one usage, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance, it's best to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top equipment you have and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you plan on making. This is especially true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The discount on the account will only be applicable if all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
