The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading them. They can be a fantastic source of additional damage and more AD or even more affixes.

Armor

The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade that an item will receive, as shown below.

A few of the upgrades are also magic or a hybrid of technology and magic, which is shown by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges in order to be used. These are indicated as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades refresh every day or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is with Iron Ore, which can be found by exploring the environment and looting minor loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available through smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on armor pieces that are of high-level. These upgrades can give a significant increases in stats and are worth the investment.

The player must be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to its max upgrade level will increase its defense value. However, it will also decrease the speed and agility of the piece. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The defensive boost gained typically isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. Upgrades can boost the accuracy of a rifle or the damage that shotgun shells cause. Certain firearms also have upgrades that enhance their inherent characteristics. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

The majority of upgrades for weapons require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. Jewels

You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the gem it can provide different stat boosts when it is inserted into gear, weapons and jewelry.

The Jeweler can create the highest levels of gems except for the rare and legendary ones which require an appropriate level to obtain. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with another jewel of the same type without destroying the original one. You are able to replace the jewel only once in a piece of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in the movement can make it feel more comfortable and is usually done for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels also create an area that is stronger than metal, so repeated friction from pivots won't cause harm as easily.

They can also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinkets that a player unlocks will be the cloak. It grants a small, but valuable boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then collect necklaces, rings, and amulets, in a similar way similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and only works with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This enables the hero to perform better when they are not active and may also help make up for a lack of a solid team or the absence of any talent tree slots which would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

In general trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best item upgrade in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace in the near future. Next, any items with desirable stats that are less significant than the iLevel for the item to be upgraded. This is true especially if you want to upgrade multiple statistics on an item level upgrade. It is more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

At the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their yellow trinket into a red one, while top and mid players usually choose either a pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have a major impact on the hero's ability to control his map.
