First, the MQ data were examined to identify the participants' rational choices. The data were classified according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. The interviewees were asked to justify their decision to use pragmatic language in a particular scenario.

They did so even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. Furthermore, they were clearly aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their actions to learner-internal factors such as their personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing life histories. They also mentioned external factors, like relational advantages. They described, for example, how their relationships with their professors allowed them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and social norms at their university.

However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and consequences they could face if they flouted the local social norms. They were worried that their native friends might perceive them as "foreignersand consider them unintelligent. This is similar to that expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are no longer the default preference of Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests. However, it is prudent for future researchers to reconsider their relevance in specific scenarios and in different cultural contexts. This will enable them to better know how different cultures can affect the pragmatic behavior of learners in the classroom and beyond.
