Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

In most cases, however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They increase the stats of whatever item they are attached to. Armor upgrades are found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using a professional or higher salvage kits to retrieve upgrades from the items.

The amount of damage that an armored piece or weapon will absorb is contingent on the extent of its upgrades. A piece of armor upgraded to maximum upgrade level will increase its damage absorption. However, it's important note that this will also increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than it was before.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game, and they all have different effects. Some upgrades give armor a greater number of health points, while others make it lighter and more powerful. The kind of armor upgrade an item upgrader kit can get will be identified by the name of the upgrade as indicated in the table below.

A few of the upgrades are also magic or a mix of technology and magic which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require a fee to use, and are identified by a "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades refresh daily or never expire according to the upgrade.

The cheapest method to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be gathered through exploring the surroundings and looting chests of minor loot. Titanium is more expensive however, it is available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied to armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can provide a significant boost to performance and are worth the investment, particularly for one-handed weapons.

The player must be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to its max upgrade level will increase its defense value. However, it will also reduce its agility and speed. For this reason, it is not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces that are higher than +9 because the increase in defense is typically not worth the extra weight and power costs of the upgrades required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. Upgrades can improve the accuracy of a rifle, or the damage that shotgun shells do. Some weapons have special upgrades that enhance their inherent qualities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, minimizes weapon overheating) and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's acceleration for greater damage) are two examples.

The majority of weapon upgrades require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount Minerals and Erons. They can be obtained by completing Side Quests or by killing a certain number of monsters and bosses.

The process of upgrading a weapon, equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade price of a certain number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be less.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your equipment and weapon sets has changed a bit. Previously you could go to an Upgrade Bench and pay a set amount of Bars to upgrade items your equipment or weapon to a higher quality. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would reset.

It's possible, but it relies heavily on RNG. Instead, you're better off going to the stores and buying equipment with low upgrade levels, but good base scores and stat distributions. They will also have a chance at gaining you the most prestigious bonuses and blessings.

Most players will want to prioritize weapon upgrades for the weapons they are most likely to use to allow them to progress faster. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their squadmates utilize to increase their power. Shepard, for example should upgrade his M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are utilized in the sockets of armor and weapons, enhancing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. They can be created through the process of jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem and a number of specific reagents at a jewelry table. The higher the level of the gem has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and sometimes by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the gem it will give different stat boosts when inserted into gear, weapons and jewelry.

The Jeweler is able to create the highest levels of gems with the exception of rare and legendary ones which you must attain an appropriate level to obtain. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out by a different jewel of the same kind without destroying the original one. However you can only swap out a jewel in a piece of equipment once.

The use of more jewels in a move will make it more smooth and is usually performed for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels also create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't cause harm as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be exchanged, however they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also Scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade items components, such as traits and aegis aren't swappable and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can provide your hero with many small, but valuable advantages. They are available in the starter area as loot or as personal story rewards. They are also available through vendors and after the completion of road interactions. They can be purchased from the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket players will unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny, but useful bonus in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar manner to how they acquired weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot which can be universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be placed in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded, and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting. This allows a hero to be more efficient when they are not active. It can also compensate for the lack of a strong slots in the team or talent tree which are usually filled by the hero's best stats.

As a rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace soon. Also, consider items with desirable stats that aren't as important as the iLevel for the item to be upgraded. This is especially true if an Item Upgrader Mod - Clashofcryptos.Trade, has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade as it's usually better to upgrade a single crucial stat than two subpar ones.

At the beginning of the game, players who are in the jungle will typically want to upgrade their trinket into a red one, while top and middle players will usually opt for a green or pink ward (depending on the matchup). These choices can impact the ability of a hero to control the map.

In addition to the items listed above, players will also find other trinkets in the form of trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones within the story. For instance, completing the main quest for a chapter or defeating a boss. You can view them by selecting the achievement from the reward section of the hero's menu.
