You'll need a hub to use SmartThings, which isn't cheap. Samsung has a range of ones - including the SmartThings Station, which you can attach to your router and is used as a nightlight. There's a cheaper SmartThings hub dongle that supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you've connected your smart refrigerator to your phone and hub, it's very easy to use. The SmartThings app lets you control your fridge from anywhere, with notifications sent to your phone when it's closed or opened. You can set up schedules, set the temperature and even create reminders.

SmartThings is a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is working to make major home appliances from a variety of manufacturers interoperable. This could mean that you can control your Samsung washer and dryer, Electrolux oven and LG television from the same app in the near future.

Although it's not as widely accepted as Alexa and Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some big names on its roster, including Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. This could change as more software updates are released, but for the moment these models are ideally suited to those who want the most complete connected fridge possible. You can save money by buying one that does not include the Family Hub if you're not one of these people. This could be worth it for you when you have a number of smart home devices that require control by the same device, or if you like the idea of a fridge with a giant touchscreen.
