Path of Exile Item Upgrading

The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item upgrader mod, the player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into a stronger base. Items with bases that are strong, such as Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or Upgrade Item an additional benefit, while the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies or as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade.

To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will have to select it and click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats as well as the necessary component or materials.

There are three types: universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be used on any kind of equipment. In the case of upgrades to gather tools when a player swaps one glyph with a different one the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, excluding the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions. Gear is now categorized in tracks, and each item can only be upgraded a certain number of times before it is "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level up, but the required materials aren't as high. This allows players to focus their efforts on a handful of essential items and maximize their impact, instead of spreading upgrade costs across several items.

Once an item has been finished being leveled and is leveled out, it will be eligible for an upgrade set of components, and an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed.
